I Have Seen the Dead Seal

from Songs For A Dying Year by Paper Gods

/

about

A portion of the poem "I Have Seen the Dead Seal Body Rising" from the book of poems Death at Sea

lyrics

I have seen the dead seal
body rising and falling with the current.
It heaves to escape its auburn rug
floating lopsided, face hidden
entrails migrating into the water
like man-o-war tendrils.

In my dream, it hovers in the air like a saint
abdomen sliced cleanly like church doors
viscera issuing like Sunday goers
how pleasant it would have been
back then, to hold your hand.

I see the love in your body
the dreamy god set deep within your brow
a solemn prayer meant for someone like me
brimming with hope and fire
and we no more than companions.
It is there I wait
listening forever.
